Facelift Scars: Placement, Healing and Warning Signs
Every facelift creates scars. The aim is to place them within natural boundaries and support favorable healing—not to promise that they will be invisible. Final scar quality depends on surgical planning, tissue tension, blood supply, individual biology and postoperative care.
Where facelift incisions may be placed

Incision length depends on the area requiring treatment. A shorter scar is not automatically better if it prevents controlled correction or concentrates excessive tension.
Why deeper support matters
The skin should not carry all lifting tension. SMAS or selected Deep Plane techniques reposition deeper structures when indicated, allowing the skin to be redraped more gently. Deep Plane is not required for every patient and does not guarantee a superior scar.
Factors that may impair healing
- Smoking or nicotine exposure
- Previous scars or surgery
- Excessive tension or compromised blood supply
- Infection, hematoma or delayed healing
- Individual tendency to hypertrophic or widened scars
- Sun exposure during scar maturation
- Uncontrolled health or nutritional problems
How scars change over time
Early scars may be red, firm, raised or irregular. They usually soften and fade over months, but maturation is individual. Hairline numbness, itching and temporary firmness can occur. Scar treatment should be selected after examination and may include silicone, sun protection, injections, laser or revision in appropriate cases.
Warning signs
Increasing redness, drainage, wound separation, darkening of adjacent skin, severe pain, fever or rapid swelling require prompt contact with the surgical team. Early evaluation is particularly important around areas of skin compromise.
Can scars be revised?
Selected scars can be improved, but revision creates a new healing process and cannot guarantee invisibility. Timing depends on the cause, location and degree of maturation.
International-patient considerations
Patients should remain close enough for early wound and skin assessment. Belvivere generally recommends at least 15 days in Brazil, with surgery in a hospital setting and logistical support from the concierge team.
