Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when part of a clot travels to the lungs. Both can occur after surgery and PE can be life-threatening. Prevention must be individualized because anticoagulation can also increase bleeding.

Factors that may increase risk

Patient factorsProcedure and recovery factors
Previous DVT or PE, clotting disorder or strong family historyLonger operating time or multiple combined procedures
Age, obesity, cancer or limited mobilityProlonged immobility after surgery or travel
Hormonal medication, pregnancy-related factors or some medical conditionsDehydration and long flights close to surgery
Nicotine and other vascular risksInsufficient postoperative support

How prevention is planned

The team assesses the patient and procedure together. Measures may include limiting operative scope, intermittent pneumatic compression during surgery, early mobilization, hydration and compression stockings when indicated. Anticoagulant medication is used selectively because it may reduce clot risk while increasing hematoma or bleeding risk. The dose and timing must be prescribed by the responsible team.

Warning signs of DVT

Possible symptoms include one-sided calf or leg swelling, pain or tenderness, warmth and color change. These findings require prompt medical assessment; symptoms alone cannot confirm or exclude a clot, and vascular imaging may be needed.

Warning signs of pulmonary embolism

Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, rapid heart rate, fainting or severe unexplained weakness requires immediate emergency care. Do not wait for an online reply or routine clinic appointment.

Air travel after plastic surgery

Flying soon after surgery combines immobility, dehydration and distance from the surgical team. Clearance depends on the operation, mobility, complications and individual clot risk. For major facial procedures, Belvivere commonly plans at least 15 days in Brazil; unexpected problems may require postponing the return flight.

Balance clot prevention with bleeding safety

Facial and neck surgery also carries hematoma risk. A protocol cannot focus on thrombosis while ignoring bleeding, blood-pressure control and tissue perfusion. This is one reason why procedure length, combined operations and medication choices must be individualized.

Hospital and continuity of care

Major procedures are performed at Hospital São José with anesthesia monitoring and perioperative prevention adapted to risk. International patients should disclose personal and family clot history, hormones, previous complications and travel plans. Review the international preparation guide and concierge logistics.
